There Will Never Be a Female James Bond, And That’s a Good Thing
With so many franchises getting revamped and gender-swapped in recent years— like Ghostbusters, Ocean’s 11, and Doctor Who — it’s no surprise that everyone is beginning to look at the James Bond franchise. After all, James Bond has been around since the 1950s with 26 different movies — all of which feature a male 007.
In a recent interview with Variety, Barbara Broccoli, the long-term producer of the Bond movies, was asked whether or not viewers would ever get a female Bond.
“He can be of any color, but he is male,” Broccoli replied, “I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”
Although her reasoning is logical, her response is already beginning to garner backlash. Clickbait headlines like this one are popping up by the hour and taking Broccoli’s words out of context. To some people, refusing to make a female 007 comes across as anti-feminist or old-fashioned.
