The “Over-Protective” Dad Routine is Overrated
Back in late April, a former NFL player named Jay Feely tweeted a picture of himself, his teen daughter, and her prom date with the caption: “Wishing my beautiful daughter and her date a great time at prom.”
Yet, if you look beyond the smiling faces, you’ll see something unexpected: in Feely’s right hand, he holds a pistol. Even if the caption sounds harmless, the intention behind the gun is clear: if my daughter doesn’t have a good time at prom, you’re going to answer to me and this lethal weapon.
Unsurprisingly, the photo went viral with mixed reactions. While some claimed it was just a joke, others found the not-so-subtle threat of violence to be in poor taste.
Jay Feely isn’t the only father to pull the “overprotective dad” routine or to even put evidence of it on the internet. In 2014, a Navy Seal posted a Facebook status where he explained the “rules” for dating his daughter when she grows up and speculated about making a chastity belt “w/ a SEAL trident engraved on it and reads ‘Ask father for key.’”
A couple of years ago, one father from Wisconsin even posed with his daughter’s date and captioned the photo, “Whatever you do to my daughter, I’ll do to you.”
