I Didn’t Plan on Adopting a Cat

But it was love at first sight

My local humane society has what they call “cat rooms”. These are bright, compact rooms full of plastic furniture, wooden shelves, and cats.

Lots of cats.

They’re everywhere — snoozing on the clawed-up, plastic couches, peaking at you from over a ledge, or nuzzling against your legs as you walk inside.

While the sheer number of cats locked inside an enclosed space might seem overwhelming to some people, it’s one of my favorite places to be. Anytime I’m feeling stressed or anxious, all I need to do is take a trip to the cat room and pet my furry friends for an hour or two.

Although I’ve met a lot of friendly and lovable cats there, I’ve never been truly tempted to take one home. Every time I think about adopting one, there are a million questions that follow: do I have time to take care of a cat? Can I afford to take care of a cat? What if I bring the cat home and they turn out to be a total jerk? I can’t just bring the cat back, right? I’d be stuck living with a mean cat for years!

Most of the time, those concerns are usually enough to halt any kind of temptation in its tracks.
