Disney’s “Openly-LGBTQ+” Character Doesn’t Impress Me
A couple of days ago, Disney broke the news that they’re unveiling their first openly-LGBTQ+ animated character in an upcoming film, Onward. The movie centers around two elf brothers going on magical adventures, and it stars an A-list cast like Tom Holland and Chris Pratt.
The openly-queer character that Disney is so keen on advertising is a cyclops police officer that’s also a lesbian. She only plays a minor role, and I couldn’t even spot her in the trailer. Some reports say that she makes a minor appearance in one scene and briefly mentions her girlfriend.
Here’s the thing — as someone who is part of the LGBTQ+ community, I never want to discourage representation. I think it’s great that the movie will have a queer character that’s being voiced by an openly gay actress.
However, I also can’t say that I’m impressed.
In the past, Disney has made a big deal about including queer characters in their movies — they advertised the “exclusively queer moment” in Beauty and The Beast as well as another “first openly gay character” in Avengers: Endgame.
